Out with the old and in with the new is the best way to describe this era of Mustang GT and Cobra. Previously, this machine was powered by the good ole fashion 5.0L pushrod engine. Mustang owners and muscle car enthusiasts got the first taste of the modular 4.6L during this generation of Mustang GT and Mustang Cobra. This head-cam motor was an instant hit amongst Mustang drivers, and a constant source of discussion and debate amongst car people all over the country. To accompany the new mod motor was a T-45 manual transmission, or the AOD-E automatic transmission.
This era also received a small design in the appearance; a mid-platform makeover common of Ford. The taillights were changed to the vintage three verticals bars previously they were three horizontal bars. This change was reminiscent of the first generation Ford Mustang models. Although this was a very popular body style, enthusiasts complained that the changes to the GT were too subtle, and the body upgrades paled in comparison to the major power plant makeover.
The Cobra on the other hand, did look more aggressive in the mid-generation ear. It still looked very similar to the GT, but did have a couple tweaks to give it a more aggressive appearance. The Mustang Cobra got a sportier front bumper, and the rear bumper featured the word COBRA stamped into the design. It also got round fog lights, and side snake badges. In addition, the hood was raised for more intake clearance contributing to the more aggressive look.
This is still a very popular vehicle, and because of that we have all the parts owners need to further improve the performance of this vehicle.

This was the first time the Mustang was powered by the 4.6L modular V8. The Mustang GT received a SOHC (Single Over Head Cam) 16-valve engine, rated at 215 horsepower. Cobra models got a 32-valve DOHC (Double/Dual Over Head Cam) that pumped out a 305 horsepower rating which was very impressive for the time period. 1997 and 1998 Mustang GTs and Cobras were nearly identical to the 1996 model in both styling and power.
