The Trailblazer SS was a model of SUV that was sportier version of the Chevrolet TrailBlazer. This was the first ever SUV to make its way into the mainstream amateur drag racing scene. Performance enthusiasts everywhere were very impressed at how quick this mega automobile was from the factory, and soon started to find out how a little modification went a long way. Like many of its GM counterparts, simple bolt-on upgrades could be done to the TrailBlazer SS to make it a force to be reckoned with.

Not just limited to its speed, other features about the TrailBlazer SS made it very appealing to the masses. The interior design, large cargo capacity, and five person seating made this a favorite amongst people looking for an alternative to the minivan – people can pile a family in and head on to soccer practice and no one would dare call them uncool in this SUV!

2006 TrailBlazer SS

The 2006 TrailBlazer SS was the first year of the release of the SS version of the TrailBlazer. It was a part of the first generation for the TrailBlazer – which was an upscale trim line of the Chevy Blazer. When the TrailBlazer SS was introduced, it really put the ‘sport’ in sport utility vehicle! This was the first time in history that an SUV came with the super sport trim package from the factory, and the first time GM put SS badges on an SUV from the factory. It was also released at a time when GM’s struggling GTO was holding onto its last breath, and took over as the V8 performance vehicle to GM owners could choose as an alternative to the Corvette.

The engine in the TrailBlazer SS was based on the engine that came standard in the last model year of the GTO. Its LS2 engine powered the massive vehicle with an impressive 395hp from the factory, and 400 lbs. ft. of torque. Drivers were immediately impressed by the TrailBlazer’s 5.8 second 0-60 times and low 14 second ¼ mile – numbers that surpassed many high performance cars.

No manual transmission options where available, which may have lost the attention of some high performance vehicle enthusiasts. The TrailBlazer SS came standard with a four speed automatic transmission. It was also geared with 4.10:1 rear differential gears, featured a cold air induction system and auxiliary oil cooler, and sat on a ZQ8 suspension. The TrailBlazer SS was fitted with special front brakes and pads similar to the high performance ones found on the Corvette. Buyers could even choose an all-wheel drive option made available through a Torsen T-3 center
differential.

Despite the popularity of the vehicle, GM closed the Moraine production plant and cancelled the investment for a new generation TrailBlazer. Rumors of returns and concept TrailBlazer SS vehicles have circulated, but it is unlikely that it will return. Instead, GM has named the Traverse to be the TrailBlazer’s replacement.
